Misty Copeland’s Rise to Stardom in Ballet

Misty Copeland’s Rise to Stardom in Ballet

In 2000, Misty received another full scholarship to the American Ballet Theatre's (ABT) summer program. That year, she was named the ABT’s National Coca-Cola Scholar (Misty Copeland). After her summer training, she joined the ABT studio company, which is a special program for young dancers still trying to get better and hopefully become professional some day. By 2001, she became a member of ABT’s corps de ballet, standing out as the only African American woman among 80 dancers. Even though she was facing a lot of challenges due to her skin color and body type, Misty was able to continue to get better in ballet. In 2007, she made history as the first African American female soloist at ABT in two decades. Some of her notable performances include roles in The Firebird, Le Corsaire, Coppélia, and Swan Lake (Misty Copeland American dancer).
In 2015, she made history as well being the first African American female principal dancer ever. When I first found out this information it stunned me, however after learning how much she has already done it isn't too surprising. She also has not just been in ballet. She also went on to be in Prince's music video "Crimson and Clover" and perform on his tour as well (Escoyne). Just recently in 2023, she collaborated with choreographer Kyle Abraham for the premiere of Ash at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance festival. This project allowed Copeland to try new dance styles that she may have not ever thought about or even tried before. While the piece included normal ballet moves we read about here in class, Abraham's choreography helped her show a different speed on stage (Escoyne). Misty Copeland continues to challenge herself and push the boundaries of ballet, but her career was even more impressive like her first dancing job and who she has worked with.

This video features a stunning 50-second clip of Misty Copeland performing in Firebird. Her powerful movements and grace bring this iconic ballet role to life in a breathtaking way. Misty’s performance highlights her incredible artistry and strength as a principal dancer. It’s a must-watch glimpse of her talent and passion for ballet.
